Carry Me Forward

This sculpture shows the current shape of the state of Virginia,
although when my ancestors settled in the territory in the
early to mid-1700, there was quite a bit more land
which is now part of other states.

Names inscribed include Bates, Bolling, Bowles, Boyd, Clark,
Cunningham, Kennon, McMichael, Patterson, Paulette,
Seay, Smith, Snell, Watson, Watts, and Witcher.

The piece is part of an ongoing series
telling my family stories.

The photo below shows its first public display as
part of Chicago Artists Month, October, 2013.
The other two works in the picture are
Eternal Renewal (metal sculpture at left)
and Playt (watercolor at right).
